Transience // Rootedness

The inaugural salon at Antioch College
Held September 16, 2016 on The Antioch College Farm

Our first salon was the culmination of an independent study entitled “Food & Dialogue,” wherein we explored the social, cultural, and spiritual implications of practices around food and eating, as well as delving into the meaning of "experiential philosophy.”

Each week a reading was accompanied by a food preparation activity. We fermented pickles, made sourdough, picked berries & baked a pie, made cheese, and processed quails.

We prepared our quails, along with chickens, and root vegetables over an open fire.

Looking through old photos, I found one with the caption “Looking at murmurations.” It shows myself, Gabby Loomis-Amrhein, and Elaine Bell standing next to our dinner table, looking out at murmurating birds.

Soon after this, the sky cracked and poured over the table.

All forty of our guests quickly disassembled our scene and moved it to a nearby annex in a true display of transience and rooting.
